Taraneh Hemami: Bullet Points
SOMArts Cultural Center
Curated by Melorra Green with Sandra Ramirez and Roula Seikaly
July 9 - August 20, 2015
Opening Reception: July 9, 6 - 9pm
From SOMArts: "Making a Scene, produced with critical support from the National Endowment of the Arts, spotlights a rich history of Bay Area artist-run, independent and alternative spaces, as well as the pioneers and contemporary trailblazers of social justice who utilized these spaces as a catalyst and megaphone. Archival material from more than 20 individuals and spaces, and art and installations by more than 30 current and historic Bay Area artists, unite the featured spaces’ disparate, yet overlapping and contingent histories of cultural engagement, community development and social justice."
This iteration of Taraneh Hemami's "Bullet Points" was a reconnection of an earlier collaboration with Invisible Venue, previously situated at the Thoreau Center for Sustainability at the Presidio of San Francisco and presented in collaboration with EMERGENCY U. S. A., as part of The Open Moment curated by Leila Grothe, November 2013. In this newer form, Hemami's visual mapping of the American gun violence epidemic in relation to conflict zone deaths is presented in an accordion formation, reconfiguring data as abstraction.
