Run by Julie and Bjorn
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Bjorn: We are subsidized by our audience who give a voluntary amount. Also we charge for drinks. Next to this we organise exhibitions in companies.
All just enough to pay for the costs. So frankly we're in it for the ideas and the experience, not the money.
We love it though that several artist have had try outs and than later went on to exhibit elsewhere, that's what Kulter is about.
Elysa: How do you get the volunteers from the audience to donate money?
Bjorn: We use a hat, that we walk around with. We work together with the real-estate agents of unrented shops. We get to use the space, it brings the place to life, which really helps to get it rented more quickly. Also we partner with other project spaces and galleries where our format fits. All our efforts are based on sharing: experience, knowledge, network, responsibility....
We initiate work together with artists and exhibitions with curators who understand our format. After that we facilitate.
Elysa: I noticed you run the space with at least two other people. How do you divide up tasks/programming?
Bjorn: We have two people for the programming and they do production aswell. Each of them produces their own exhibitions incl promotion. One person is devoted to contacting partners, sponsors and is a mirror to the concepts of the exhibitions.
