LE (9) BIS
Run by Assan Smati, Damien Deroubaix, and Djemel
I'm Damien Deroubaix, artist and one of the 3 founder members of LE (9) BIS. Assan is founder of LE (9) BIS, but he didn't make the program. Djemel and I made it. We have money from the city, the region and the state and some people help on specific projects. Its not a lot of money, we still do with the minimum, we are working for no money.
As we have always done since the beginning in February 1998, we will show this year a famous artist and unknown artists. This year, for example, Mark Dion will have a show one month after Maël Nozahic, a 25-year-old talented painter.
LE (9) BIS is a not-for-profit exhibition space devoted to promoting contemporary art for the benefit of the public. The core activity of LE (9) BIS is an outstanding exhibition program which shows innovative and thought-provoking work by international contemporary artists. The space mounts six to eight exhibitions a year in a variety of media: sculpture, painting, installation, video and photography, drawing. LE (9) BIS was started in 1998 by artists Assan Smati and Damien Deroubaix in a spirit of community, hoping to assist and encourage innovation, experimentation and potential in the arts. This a privately funded space supported by the City Council of Saint-Etienne, the Region Rhône-Alpes and the Ministry of Culture, with the possibility of additional future funding coming from the public and private sectors. It attracts a wide audience of art professionals, artists, writers, critics, curators, collectors, lecturers, teachers, students, and the general public. Group and class visits can be arranged by appointment.
