Well, I was once a volunteer at Artist Television Access (late 90's.) Many of the same people that volunteered then are still there. ATA is completely volunteer run, the rent is pretty much scraped together from screenings. But anyway, they had this space that was rented out for various things, an office, studio, etc... and when it was available again two years ago, they sent out an email. I was on the list and thought it'd be a great space for a window front gallery because of the super central Mission location. The rent was $400 so I thought if I could find 10 friends to go in on it, we could each pay $40 a month and create a gallery. I asked around and found plenty of friends interested, so we started it. We met and came up with the name together. Now we are 11 people: me, Chuck Mobley, Kevin Killian, John Koch, Katie Bush, Paula Pereira, Cliff Hengst, Scott Hewicker, Cassie Riger, Dodie Bellamy and Craig Goodman. We each get one month a year to curate whatever we want, there are no real communal curatorial decisions. We tried it here and there but its hard to get a consensus or even get everyone together at once, so I keep it super simple; send out an email every now and again when we need new members for instance, rent reminders, etc... We take yearly turns paying the rent to ATA and getting reimbursed from everyone, and each person works with the one before and after to set dates, paint the space, etc...
We did apply for a Southern Exposure grant and got $3000 last year, which we split up amongst us, so we each got $300 to spend on our show, or rent, whatever. Otherwise, we each pay for our own shows, paint, etc... We share a gmail account with contacts, facebook, blogspot, etc. and each person does promotion for their show. Some of us added our contacts to the gmail account so that is shared.
